Southeast Portland
Southeast Portland begins at E Burnside and ends at the Milwaukie city limits, with parks, nightlife, thrifting, and historic homes in between. With such a diverse set of neighborhoods and people living in SouthEast, you can bet there’s always something going on. You’ll find holiday festivities on Peacock Lane, street fairs in Sellwood or Woodstock, the ever-popular Soapbox Derby in Mt. Tabor, live music and fantastic shopping in the Hawthorne District, and much more – all year round.
Southeast Portland
is known for…
Arts, great shopping, family-friendly, live entertainment, historic homes, great food, unique nightlife, outdoor spaces and parks, Reed College, and the hippy/hipster lifestyle.
Find Your Lifestyle in the SE
While SE is one of the most eclectic sections of Portland, it’s filled with community spirit. Here you’ll find hand-painted banners and street art alongside fiercely noncorporate local businesses, tons of Farmer’s Markets, and plenty of great thrifting.
Each neighborhood in SouthEast has its own personality. Are you looking for an upscale neighborhood? You’ll find it in Woodstock or Mt. Tabor. Do you connect more with an artsy vibe? Check out the Hawthorne District. Want to go ultramodern? You need to head to the newly renovated SE waterfront.
You have to visit the one-of-a-kind communities of SE PDX to really understand what it’s all about. For example, you may be headed from dinner on Belmont, to a show at the Hawthorne Theatre, only to come across a blacktop that’s completely filled in with a beautiful community painting. Or, you may be trying to cut through the craftsman neighborhood, Ladd’s Addition, to find yourself kicking up your heels in an unexpected rose garden.
Artists unite in SouthEast. This is where you’ll end up driving next to a unicyclist headed home from clown school or start watching the installation of some street art by Forest for the Trees. There is so much artwork here it spills out onto street corners, into neighborhoods, and even on garage doors.
If you have kids, SE has some of the best spots! There are tons of kid friendly parks – and then there’s the waterfront Oaks Amusement Park. SouthEast also hosts Mt. Tabor’s Portland Soapbox Derby, has local festivals, and even Wunderland – the arcade where games only cost a dime (yes, that’s a thing). It’s all in SouthEast!
SouthEast Portlanders are passionate about the environment. That means a lot of SouthEast has been built to accommodate anyone ready to bike, walk, or take advantage of the TriMet. The MAX Orange line has been extended throughout SouthEast and buses service just about every neighborhood in the area. So, if you’re looking to go green, SouthEast is the place to be.
The beautiful natural environments inspire much of the artistic freedom in SouthEast. Parks like Laurelhurst, Mt. Tabor, and Powell Butte all provide incredible green space to children and adults throughout Portland. Plus, there are a ton of yearly park events like yoga, movies, concerts, adult-sized water slides, and more!
